The Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN) honors Lil Kim with the WEEN Icon Award along with other distinguished honorees at its sixth annual “WEEN Awards” on Wednesday, November 16 at ESPACE in New York City hosted by radio personality, Angela Yee.
The mission of the WEEN Awards is to recognize women for their commitment to the empowering of women. The Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network promotes education, mentorship, and change for young women across the world. Proceeds from the WEEN Award events helps support an annual summer program for emerging young women in the entertainment industry and in business called WEEN Academy.
The theme of this year’s awards was #InSolidarity, and paid homage to community, racial and social justice leaders in plight to eradicate injustice, violence, and disparities in Black and Latino communities. The honorees were presented awards by distinguished industry influencers such as Keri Hilson, Necole Bitche, June Ambrose, Londell McMillan, Valeisha Butterfield-Jones.
Lil Kim, was honored with the WEEN Icon Award. Lil Kim is known for changing the game for women in rap with her hit singles that spoke about drugs, growing up in the streets and sexuality.
This year’s other honorable recipients included Actress Meagan Good, Recording Artist Teyana Taylor, Music Executive Ethiopia Habtemariam, Actress Yara Shahidi, Editor of Teen VogueElaine Weltheroth, Executive Dia Simms, Mother of Sandra Bland; Geneva Reed-Veal.
