The Foundation For Letters honored Vivica A. Fox, along with other distinguished honorees at its Fifth Annual Benefit Gala on Wednesday, October 19 at IAC Center Lobby.
Each year, The Foundation For Letters gala is dedicated too and honors young voices and trailblazers forging paths for women of color in literature and media. One hundred young scholars studying with the Foundation was in attendance serving as on-the-scene reporters writing reviews as young style, design and food critics blogging from the red carpet, while others read their work on stage and shared their personal stories.
The “Empire” star and entrepreneur Vivica A. Fox was honored with the Distinguished Service Award for her accomplishments and contribution in the fields of arts and entertainment while exemplifying how literacy is the vehicle for impactful change.
Fox said “Its amazing to be here tonight, Im so happy to be involved with an event where sisters are sticking together and honoring each other from all different walks of life.” “This award warms my heart, I’ve been in showbiz for over two decades and its so wonderful for people to finally say, girl you’ve been holding it down and we salute you, she added.”
The other honorable 2016 ‘Distinguished Service Award’ recipients included: social activist, Marley Dias, the promising 11 year-old behind #1000BlackGirlBooks, an international movement to collect and donate children’s books that feature Black girls as lead characters, renowned Brooklyn principal, community leader and author, Dr. Nadia Lopez (Humans of New York, TED Talks), New York Times reporter, Catherine Saint Louis and novelist, philanthropist and television personality, Carmen Rita Wong (‘Never Too Real’), among others.
